What is the real overhead for VoIP traffic?
  • Many customers buy into VoIP on the basis of reduced bandwidth.
  • It should be noted that on top of the quoted voice speeds there is also an overhead for the Ethernet and IP packetisation. This can have a significant impact on the actual data passed across the network.
  • This site http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk698/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094ae2.shtml shows typical actual data sizes.
  • For example a 64k pcm call via VoIP uses around 87Kbps for each call. PacketBand uses the same overhead for the first call but nothing for the second.
  • A G.726 32k VoIP call uses around 55Kbps of data.
  • PB-TDM can provide better service and quality at similar real network data rates
